EOLO reveal facial injuries suffered by Lorenzo Fortunato at Il Lombardia

Lorenzo Fortunato had promised a lot into Il Lombardia, after finishing sixth with an aggressive performance at the Giro dell'Emilia. However his race had a premature end, as he crashed heavily in the first half of the race.

In the same crash that saw Mikel Nieve abandon and close out his career, another rider was on the ground and in a bad state. That was later confirmed to be the leader of EOLO-Kometa Lorenzo Fortunato, who abandoned the race aswell with multiple injuries to the face. However, the team confirmed that he had not suffered any fractures as a result.

“Thank you all for your support. We will come back stronger!” Fortunato said in a message shared by the team later in the day. The 26-year old was an outsider for the race, which eventually saw Tadej Pogacar cross the line first to take his second consecutive win in the monument.

Fortunato had been scheduled to ride the Giro del Veneto and the Veneto Classic now late in the season, but it is unlikely that he will follow the plan, in order to recover from his injuries.
