With the 2025 Tour de Suisse marking the two-year anniversary of the tragic death of Bahrain - Victorious rider Gino Mäder, there has been plenty of emotion in the air in Switzerland this week. On stage 3, Quinn Simmons took a brilliant solo win, and afterwards dedicated his triumph to the much missed Mäder.
"The motivation was super high today. I really wanted to win yesterday, on the two-year anniversary of when we lost Gino. I really wanted to win and dedicate it to him. I did a day late," a slightly emotional Simmons explained in his post-stage interview afterwards. "It’s really hard for me to be here again, especially seeing his mum at the start. Now, I can pay a bit of tribute, and for sure I had extra motivation today."
Given this was his first victory since regaining the Stars and Stripes jersey of American national champion, there was plenty to celebrate for Simmons at the line. "The first part of my celebration was for me, my jersey. The last time I was in this jersey, I never won a bike race and had a terrible season. That was a huge motivation to win in the American champion's jerse," he concludes. "I'm not sure that last happened at World Tour level. The final gesture was to dedicate it to Gino."
