The final monument of the season is Il Lombardia. Taking place in the Autumn, it is aptly nicknamed the race of the fallen leaves and it signals for many the final big goal of the season, or the finale of the road season. It takes place in northern Italy, and the race is based around the Alps, and is one in which the climbers usually succeed.
It was first held in 1905 and it has since became one of the most important one-day races in the calendar. Italy has it's illustrious set of Autumn classics and the Giro di Lombardia is regularly the last one to take place, but always the most important.
