Il Lombardia has always provided the platform for a lot of spectacle, however due to it's difficulty - both in terms of length and total climbing - many times riders aren't capable of reaching their best numbers. Tadej Pogacar and Enric Mas pushed the bar incredibly high however.
With the duo's battle on the four-kilometer ascent, the time record up it has been lowered exponentially. Whilst Bauke Mollema held the record, set in 2019 when he rode to the win at 12:45 minutes, Pogacar and Mas yesterday rode the ascent in a time of 12:29 minutes. The absence of the Muro di Sormano may have played a role, however nevertheless an impressive feat.
According to an estimate by Gabriel Stróżyk, the duo averaged 6.9W/Kg up the penultimate ascent in which the race was decided. Taking into consideration the race featured over 250 kilometers and almost 5000 meters of climbing, those numbers have seen them ahead of the field - except Mikel Landa - by quite a significant distance.
