Movistar stay far from the red line, but endured a difficult season at World Tour level. Lacking Alejandro Valverde, it has seen it's leaders perform but lacking big season-marking triumphs.
UCI ranking 2023: 10.984 (12th)
Victories (World Tour): 16 (3)
Top riders in UCI rankings: Matteo Jorgenson (35th)
Rúben Silva (CyclingUpToDate): 4. After a great end to 2022 Enric Mas had a lot of promise but this wasn't a year of improving. A few nice results but nothing that pops out - although crashing out of the Tour de France didn't do him any favours. The team rode the cobbled classics tremendously via Matteo Jorgenson and Ivan García Cortina. Jorgenson was in fact the team's best performer this year, whilst most of the team remained at virtually the same level. However with Alejandro Valverde gone the team clearly misses that extra rider to not only perform but score UCI points, and the signing of Fernando Gaviria definitely didn't do it despite early promise.
Kieran Wood (CyclingUpToDate): 4. Underwhelming is probably the best way to describe Movistar’s 2023. Although there were highlights, Einer Rubio’s stage win at the Vuelta a Espana, Matteo Jorgenson winning the Tour of Oman and Ruben Guerreiro winning the Saudi Tour stand out but the crashing out of Enric Mas at the Tour de France left them rudderless and the Spaniard’s inability to challenge Jumbo-Visma at the Vuelta a Espana ensured he could not improve on his performances of last year.
Ondřej Zhasil (CyclingUpToDate): 4.5. You know it's been a bad year when you're one of the most traditional GC teams yet your best results come from cobbled classics. And that's what happened with Movistar. Despite Mas' 6th place at Vuelta and a Giro stage by Rubio, the first season in the era without Alejandro Valverde feels like an unfinished business.
Juan Larra (CiclismoAlDia): 4. The season of the team is one of suspense despite the great start with victories in the Saudi Tour, the Tour of Oman and the Giro d'Italia. However, the Tour de France was disappointing and in the Vuelta Enric Mas finished no better than sixth. The appearance of Oier Lazkano, the best thing for the future. The man who scored the most UCI points, Matteo Jorgenson, left for Jumbo-Visma. The Spanish team is far from the elite.
Jorge Borreguero (CiclismoAlDia): 2.5. A very disappointing year for the Spanish team. With the Vuelta a España as its main objective, Movistar failed to stand out at any time. Enric Mas finished sixth in an overall where he was aiming for the podium, or at least to compete for it. The best news for the team was Oier Lazkano, who is aiming high.
Victor Gonzalez (CiclismoAlDia): 4.5. Disappointing season for the Movistar Team. Oier Lazkano doesn't deserve the failing grade, but some good results from Gonzalo Serrano, Matteo Jorgenson before entering into conflict with the team, Einer Rubio's stage in the Giro d'Italia, and Enric Mas' performance in the Vuelta a España are not enough to pass the Spanish team in my opinion.
Filipe Pereira (CiclismoAtual): 4. Movistar was something else when the season started, racking up wins with Ruben Guerreiro and Matteo Jorgenson. However when May came around, victories came less often, even tough Einer Rubio and Jorgensson kept showing themselves at a very good GC level, with Rubio even getting Movistar their only Grand Tour stage win of the season. Other than that, Enric Mas crashing on the first stage of the Tour pretty much doomed the team's expectations at the French race and in Spain there was nothing that could be done to stop Jumbo-Visma. A Movistar that seemed better than 2022 when the season began but that afterwards, just seemed lost. And that has been a thing in Movistar for a while now.
Carlos Silva (CiclismoAtual): 4.
Ivan Silva (CiclismoAtual): 4. Highlight of the season goes to Rubio's stage win in Giro D'Italia and Enric Mas' 6th place in Vuelta a España but the team definitely fell short to their expectations.
