Groupama-FDJ lacked big wins at World Tour level, but had a consistent season which had them quite up the UCI rankings. A season of transition as Thibaut Pinot and Arnaud Démare end their times with the team, and new stars are
UCI ranking 2023: 14.834 (7th)
Victories (World Tour): 19 (2)
Top riders in UCI rankings: Thibaut Pinot (21st)
Rating - 4.67
Rúben Silva (CyclingUpToDate): 6. Groupama had a season where each character (leader in this case) had it's own story. Arnaud Démare won a few races but came up short of his goal and the team ultimately took him out of the Tour de France lineup, which led him to leave the team almost immediately. That was to support David Gaudu who was only 9th in his season goal, who had nice performances in the spring however. Thibaut Pinot had mixed goals at the Giro but ended up brilliantly snatching the KOM jersey and a 5th place, alongside a very popular and spectacular Tour de France. Stefan Küng rode the one-day races very well, Valentin Madouas also did so and won the nationals alongside the Bretagne classic, whilst the team grew it's new star Lenny Martínez who won at Mont Ventoux and wore red at the Vuelta a Espana - Romain Grégoire, on different terrain, has also proven himself already as an elite rider. A team in a big transition this year but one who had it's secondary leaders perform well. Michael Storer and Jake Stewart had relatively disappointing seasons - except for the Tour de l'Ain where ironically they won two out of three stages.
Kieran Wood (CyclingUpToDate): 3. Not a great year for Marc Madiot’s team in 2023. After promising so much, the llacklustre Tour de France performance from David Gaudu summed up the campaign. Lenny Martinez, Stefan Kung, Bruno Armirail and Romain Gregoire all had their moments but Thibaut Pinot was once again the star, winning the King of the Mountains at the Giro d’Italia and enjoying a spine-tingling farewell at the Tour. An all-around underwhelming year though sadly with the controversial exit of Arnaud Demare another black mark on the season.
Ondřej Zhasil (CyclingUpToDate): 5. For me, the man who carried the legacy of Groupama - FDJ the best was the retiring Thibaut Pinot who seemed to be having fun racing for the last time in a while. The continuing fight for leadership saw Gaudu failing to deliver, while Démare opted for mid-season transfer. Madouas had a good year, Küng was solid, the youngsters did well. Overall it's been an average year for Groupama - FDJ.
Juan Larra (CiclismoAlDia): 4. 19 victories and seventh in the UCI ranking for the season. The explosion of the exciting Romain Grégoire, the leadership of Lenny Martinez in the Vuelta and little else to highlight. They gave everything for David Gaudu in the Tour de France and it didn't work out. The Frenchman finished second in Paris-Nice, but from then on his campaign fell apart. The decision to sideline a man like Arnaud Démare didn't seem the right one either. Last year of a Thibau Pinot who shone in the Giro, although he was unable to win any stage.
Jorge Borreguero (CiclismoAlDia): 4. As a French team, Groupama's main objective was to have a great Tour de France considering its possibilities. However, they left the Grande Boucle without stage wins and with David Gaudu on the edge of the Top 10 overall, ninth. The team's year is much improved for 2024.
Victor Gonzalez (CiclismoAlDia): 5.5. Thibaut Pinot's last year, with a top 5 in the Giro d'Italia and being the most loved rider in the Tour de France; an impressive David Gaudu in Paris-Nice, finishing ahead of Jonas Vingegaard in the General Classification; and very good results from Valentin Madouas (2nd in Strade Bianche and 5th in Liège-Bastogne-Liège) and Stefan Küng (5th in Paris-Roubaix and 6th in the Tour of Flanders), give my thumbs up to the Groupama - FDJ season.
Filipe Pereira (CiclismoAtual): 5. Groupama-FDJ's season was pretty much built around David Gaudu and even tough he started on the right foot, the young French rider ended up far from the Tour podium. The likes of Thibaut Pinot and Lenny Martinez did their best to save Groupama's GT season and Romain Gregoire also had good wins in smaller French races. However, the team's best moments of the season were during the Spring, with Stefan Küng on cobbles and Pinot in the Giro, undeperforming in the big wins department.
Carlos Silva (CiclismoAtual): 5.
Ivan Silva (CiclismoAtual): 4.5. 2 Top 10 in Grand Tour GC, the mountain classification at Giro D'Italia, a win on Bretagne Classic and a time trial win in Tour de Suisse. However also have 3 top 10 spots on monuments and wore the pink jersey briefly on Giro D'Italia.
