"We tried to alert the Commissaires but were ignored" - After cancellation of men's Tre Valli Varesine, Brodie Chapman criticises lack of action in women's race

There will be no battle between the likes of Tadej Pogacar and Remco Evenepoel on the roads of Italy this Tuesday afternoon after the mid-race cancellation of Tre Valli Varesine due to adverse weather conditions. Earlier in the day however, the women's edition was completed, where Cedrine Kerbaol took the victory.

The thing is though, the weather conditions the women had to put up were equally as bad as the men a few hours later. So why was one race played out and another brought to a premature end? Well, taking to X (Twitter) after the men's race was cancelled, Lidl-Trek's experienced Australian Brodie Chapman shed some light on the situation.

"As riders we always want to race. Today however in the women’s race multiple riders expressed to myself and amongst each other the same feelings as expressed here re: safety, and precautions in light of recent events," Chapman explains in reply to Domestique's write up of Tadej Pogacar's explanation of the men's race being cancelled, referring to the recent tragedy at the 2024 World Championships in Zurich, where Swiss junior Muriel Furrer tragically lost her life.

"You could see that many riders felt the lack of visibility and holes filled with water weren’t safe. We tried to alert the Commissaires but were ignored," the 33-year-old, former Australian national champion continued. "In the end, I preferred to say something in the race instead of online."

Domestique did then reply to Chapman's comment asking: "So they weren't even considering stopping the race?" But the Aussie could not reveal any further information on the situation surrounding the women's event, answering: "This I don’t know."
