Tim Wellens supports riders' choice to protest against course of Renewi Tour stage 5: "We made a good choice"

Tim Wellens has won the Benelux Tour for the third time. His leading position in the 2023 edition, which was called the Renewi Tour, was no longer in danger in the final stage.

"I knew it was going to be very difficult without the Ardennes stage, but I focused on the time trial and I had a very good day on Geraardsbergen," Wellens laughs.

"I knew that two stages were going to be very important, I was very good there," he says to WielerFlits. Wellens also commented on the strike of the riders, who found the final too narrow and therefore too dangerous. "We stopped to find a solution, that was a good choice. We discussed and not everyone agreed, but that is also difficult to get everyone on the same page. But we made a good choice."

After a success on home roads, Belgian's focus will shift to a more exotic race - Gree-Tour of Guangxi which returns to the calendar for the first time since 2019.
