Where it was thought in advance that the classification men would interfere in the battle for the stage victory in Barcelona, they took it easy due to the weather conditions. This created opportunities for versatile sprinters such as Kaden Groves who came close to winning in the second stage.
Stage two had many crashes and very severe weather conditions. The Australian Groves could only confirm this in an interview with Eurosport after the finish. "Yes, it was a tough day with tough conditions since the start. I have to be happy with a second place, because today was half a chance for me. Kron was just too strong."
After the crash of Primoz Roglic, Jumbo-Visma tried to temporize in the peloton. Alpecin-Deceuninck, however, did not listen to this. "Yes, the roads were slippery. Jumbo-Visma took the initiative to slow down the peloton. It was a bit awkward as Team dsm-firmenich and ourselves were just picking up pace to catch the breakaway. Today was an opportunity for us so we kept riding. They didn't appreciate it, but sometimes that's just how it goes."
The Australian sprinter is particularly looking forward to the upcoming sprint stages. Groves sees the nervousness in first stages as a boost. "I'm proud of my ride today and I'm looking forward to stages four and five. That's really where my opportunities lie."
