Mike Teunissen has played a vital role in Biniam Girmay's historical Tour de France success. However it doesn't seem like the Dutchmen was entirely content at the Belgian formation as he's rumoured to change colours again after two years in Intermarché - Wanty. According to WielerFlits, his new destination will be Visma | Lease a Bike where he already rode twice in the past.
Two years ago, Teunissen left the Dutch formation to see if he could still ride for himself in some races. It brought him to Intermarché - Wanty, where he was allowed to chase his own chances in the classics and would help Biniam Girmay in the sprints. The latter paid off at the recent Tour. Teunissen played a leading role in the last sprint victory of the 24-year-old Eritrean.
There was plenty of interest in the services of the 32-year-old Teunissen, whose colleagues praise him for his racing insight and ingenuity. On top of his selfless work for teammates, he took a nice stage victory at the Renewi Tour last year, with which he set the tone for a very strong autumn of Intermarché - Wanty. At the European Championships on the VAM-berg, Teunissen also guided fellow countryman Kooij to bronze after a strong race. His current employer also wanted to continue with him. According to WielerFlits, there were still four offers on the table, including from Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale.
At Intermarché - Wanty, the Limburger was a major force in the plan of performance coach Aike Visbeek with his experience and racing intelligence. He was also of great value to the development of Girmay. Teunissen is having a great time with the Walloon formation, but also always had a lot of fun within what is now Visma | Lease a Bike. With Teunissen, the Dutch formation will get the desired lead-out man for the young Olav Kooij.
