Miguel Ángel López has seen his contract with Astana Qazaqstan Team terminated, however it seems unlikely that this will see the end of his career as a pro cyclist. Rumours surge that he will be racing in Colombia over the 2023 season.
A post from Mundo Ciclístico reports that López will be racing in Colombia with "one of the biggest teams in the national peloton" and that he would be "disputing races of the national and international calendar". It has been suggested over social media that López could join Team Medellín - EPM, home of Spanish pro Oscar Sevilla and Fabio Duarte who are two of the biggest figures in the current scene.
In July López was interrogated due to possible connections with a doping ring in Spain. Upon finding new information, in December he was fired from Astana after further evidence of his connections with Dr. Marcos Maynar, who had been arrested in Spain alongside several other members.
It is claimed that López may have taken a prohibited substance right before the Giro d'Italia which had him abandon inside the opening week due to a bad reaction - although there is no evidence to confirm the theory. López said he would pursue legal action against his former team, but at the time being silence hovers over the climber.
