Joxean Matxin set to extend deal with UAE Team Emirates ruling out much rumoured departure

Although in recent weeks there had been reports that Joxean Matxin might be set for a departure from his role as head of UAE Team Emirates. In a new update to the saga however, the Spaniard is now set to extend terms.

This has been reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport journalist Ciro Scognamiglio. Matxin was ending his contract this year, and after the end of the first week of the Vuelta a Espana, last August 26th, it was said that the Spaniard's future as UAE's sports director was far from clear. "There has never been a doubt about this," Scognamiglio says now though after revealing that Matxin will stay with UAE Team Emirates on a new contract that will begin with the arrival of the 2025 season.

Matxín has two main objectives ahead of him with UAE Team Emirates in the coming years. First, to resolve the tensions with Juan Ayuso that have arisen since the 2024 Tour de France. The UAE Team Emirates director has been the one who has most publicly attempted to handle the situation and ease tensions, so that relations between the Spanish rider and the rest of the UAE team do not break down.

On the other hand, he must also continue to strengthen for the long term. Pablo Torres has arrived at UAE Team Emirates Gen Z through Matxín, and it seems that he will become a new success for the sports director. In the Tour l'Avenir, Torres finished 2nd overall and took two stage wins, becoming one of the great protagonists of the race.

The WorldTour teams were all over him, but the young Spanish rider wants to stay loyal to the UAE and succeed there. In fact, it has already been said that he has rejected an offer from INEOS Grenadiers, which has the arrival of Pablo Castrillo underway and wanted to round off with the signing of Pablo Torres.
