The penultimate day of the Criterium du Dauphiné was a brutal one and
Team Visma | Lease a Bike brought the race to
Tadej Pogacar. However the Slovenian was able to resist every test and in the end,
Jonas Vingegaard had to settle with a second place once again.
Visma had Matteo Jorgenson on the attack in two occasions in the first climbs of the day, and Sepp Kuss was also in the breakaway, creating the looming threat of an attack from the Dane. All of this was in hopes of making the stage as difficult as possible and burn Pogacar out.
The plan was set and executed, but the truth is the World Champion was in another undefeatable day and Vingegaard's strong legs on the day still wouldn't be enough to match the Slovenian.
In the final climb, Pogacar went all-out early on once again, and Vingegaard couldn't match him. “But when he attacked, I tried to follow, but it quickly became clear that I had to slow down,” the Dane said in a post-race interview. The gap didn't grow as dramatically as the day before, but Vingegaard wouldn't be able to close it down.
“I may not have been able to follow, but to be honest I think I did well. I found my own pace and didn’t lose much at the end. I can be happy with how it went. I can see my values and they were very good. Tadej was better again and deserves it.”
Vingegaard seems to be on the right path, but it simultaneously appears as if his chances of winning the Tour depend more on what may happen to Pogacar. “I still hope that this race will help me to improve, so that I am better in the Tour than I am now. But at the moment I have to say: Tadej was the strongest yesterday and today too. Congratulations to him.”
I couldn't watch the race, but I listen to Tadej saying that Visma put him in danger by descending, so sad... I hope VISMA doesn't despair and try to win with dangerous moves. Cycling is already dangerous enough.
If he follows what he considers a dangerous move then it’s not Visma putting him in danger it’s him deciding that the danger is worth it.
No, that's no the point, the movement was dangerous, for tadej AND for Visma riders. Do you think that is ok? DSs Visma have to maintain cold blood and not try to win risking riders safety.
That is not what the Wisma riders like Sep Kuss say. If you look at the average speed of the downturn it was normal for a route like that. The french rider Roman Bardet in front drove 1 minut faster downhill that the Wisma Team. It is the individual riders choice and responsibility not to drive faster than what he considers safe.
Thus stop whining Maria.
Dangerous moves win races sometimes.
Maria. I think riders will attack on the downhill sometimes. It’s up to every rider to descend within their limits. Some riders are more skilled descenders. Others have different risk tolerance. Tadej followed so clearly he believed the risk was worth it to stay with his rivals.
And yes, racing downhill is dangerous.
Remember what Moho told you Tadej.
Tadej himself descended like a mad man in the early part of TdF last year. I remember watching his mad descend to gain time on Vingegaard and his rear wheel lost grip for a moment and skidded. So, I don't think it is a fair to blame Visma for the fast descend. There will always be someone who wants to take more risk than others and there will always be someone who are naturally better at bike handling.
Tadej is not a cry-baby or someone quarrelsome/scandalous. If he said it was a risky move and he didn't like it, It was because he felt there was a danger that went beyond what was usual.
