UPDATE: Unfortunately @RichardCarapazM will not take to today’s start at #TirrenoAdriatico due to feeling unwell with a gastro infection. Rest up Richie and see you back at the races soon.
Although he's able to compete, unlike teammate Egan Bernal who's suffered a much more serious accident, the first few months of Richard Carapaz's season have been heavily affected by multiple health issues, which this week also drove him out of Tirreno-Adriatico.
The INEOS Grenadiers rider was coming back to stage-racing but was unable to finish it, as he came down with a gastro infection that has put him out of the race before the start of stage five. He was outside of the Top50, over three minutes down on race leader Tadej Pogacar at that time, after he was far from his normal level on the summit finish to Bellante.
Earlier this season he took a heavy crash as Etoile de Bessèges which took him out of GC contention and saw him abandon. He returned to racing the week after at the Tour de la Provence but tested positive for Covid-19 and had to abandon. Tirreno marks the third stage-race Carapaz has started this year, having finished none in the process. He travelled to Ecuador shortly after his positive Covid test and won the time-trial national championships.
Carapaz is expected to race at the Volta a Catalunya but it is unlikely that he will be at the race with high ambitions as he is struggling to get god form. The Ecuadorian has the Giro d'Italia pointed out as his main goal for the season this May, where he will be eyeing a second overall win after he has done so back in 2019 with Movistar Team.
