It has not been an unusual scenery to have a large list of DNS at the startline of stage-races this season due to Covid-19 outbreaks, however at Paris-Nice that isn't reported to be the case. However, at the start of stage five a total of 18 riders from several teams have not made it to the startline.
The list of riders is at it follows: Clément Champoussin (AG2R Citroën Team); Kristian Sbaragli, Jay Vine and Jonas Rickaert (Alpecin-Fenix); Amaury Capiot (Arkéa Samsic); Dylan Groenewegen (Team BikeExchange - Jayco); Matteo Trentin (UAE Team Emirates); Yves Lampaert and Zdenek Stybar (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team); Kevin Vermaerke (Team DSM); Nils Pollit (BORA - hansgrohe); Carl Fredrik Hagen, Tom van Asbroeck and James Piccoli (Israel - Premier Tech); Gino Mäder (Bahrain - Victorious); Stefan Bissegger, Neilson Powless and Jens Keukeleire (EF Education-EasyPost).
Whilst some riders have taken a leave as the race takes on the mountains starting today, mainly to focus on the classics such as the likes of the Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl duo or Nils Pollit, several riders have reported illness. Matteo Trentin has also abandoned due to concussion-like symptoms after his crash on stage two that played a role in UAE Team Emirates' bad performance.
12.5% of all riders that finished yesterday's time-trial in Montluçon have not taken to the start today, in what is likely one of the biggest percentage of non-starters in recent cycling history.
