Lidl-Trek's Quinn Simmons has soloed to the a stunning stage 3 win at the 2025 Tour de Suisse from the breakaway. For the 24-year-old, it marks a first win since reclaiming the US national late last month.
Six riders forced their way up the road to form a strong breakaway in the early part of the stage, those being: Emiel Verstrynge (Alpecin - Deceuninck), Nans Peters (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team), Samuele Battistella and Max Walker (EF Education - EasyPost), Quinn Simmons (Lidl - Trek) and Brent Van Moer (Lotto).
Whilst things were calm in the peloton for the most part, inside the final 50km there was a scare for former Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas. In a somewhat innocuous moment, the Welshman fell almost in slow motion in the middle of the peloton, staying down for a while afterwards too, sparking concern. Thomas did get back on the bike though, and the INEOS Grenadiers sent half the team back to help Thomas try and limit his losses.
Inside the final 40km, things started to break down in the breakaway, with Walker and Peters the first to be dropped. Only around 1:20 clear of the peloton though, the break were already starting to be reeled in by the bunch.
By 25km to go, Battistella, Simmons, Van Moer, and Verstrynge were only around 20 seconds ahead of the peloton. Thomas, meanwhile, was still chasing hard at the back, around a minute from the front of the bunch and running out of teammates to support him.

Simmons is one of the most instantly recognisable riders in the peloton
At 20km from the line, on the first of the categorised climbs of the day, Simmons then flew away from his breakaway companions, summitting the climb solo at the head of the race. By 10km to go, Simmons was still 30 seconds clear, with the chase behind stalling too.
With a sharp ascent towards the final in the final couple of kilometres, though, Simmons was by no means certain of a stage win. The chase continued to stall though, much to Simmons' benefit and at 5km to go, the US national champion had extended his lead to 43 seconds over the peloton, although a countering Neilson Powless was somewhere in between.
As the final kick up to the line began, Powless was caught by the chase. Simmons though, remained more than 40 seconds up the road, more than enough for the American to take victory.
