De Marchi went solo with 22 kilometers to go, joined by Nans Peters as the Frenchman attacked with 13 kilometers to go, however both were caught just outside the final five kilometers as the sprinter teams set it up for their leaders.
It was a complicated run-up to the line as teams could not have a strong leadout, with the leaders having to launch early, Pascal Ackermann doing so first and then loosing positions, Arnaud Démare managed to time his move to perfection to return to his winning ways. He beat
Olav Kooij and
Phil Bauhaus to the line. Hayter arrived in the peloton to confirm his yellow jersey.
