Annemiek van Vleuten took a tumble this morning in the Mixed Relay TTT at the World Championships, and the diagnosis from the injuries leaves mixed feelings.
National team coach Loes Gunnewijk has issued a statement in the last minutes saying that "Annemiek is allowed to cycle with this stable fracture, but the question is of course with how much pain that will be. We will see that in the coming days. We hope that Annemiek can still start, but that has to be justified."
The veteran has suffered a small fracture in her right elbow. In a Twitter post she said she had several bruises and specifically pointed towards a possible injury on her elbow, which is now confirmed. However, the fracture does not completely rule her out of the Elite Road Race which is set to take place this Saturday, where she was a big favourite.
Van Vleuten will evaluate the damage in the coming days and test to see if she is capable of riding the race this weekend. If not, it would be a tremendous hit for the Movistar Team rider who has dominated much of the climbing calendar of the year, and was a prime favourite to take a second rainbow jersey in Wollongong.
