Switzerland had a strong lineup to contest for the win in the Mixed Relay TTT, but the win was nevertheless a surprised, and a much needed boost of motivation for
Stefan Küng who has had several near-misses this year.
“It's really great, it feels really, really good. We have a good team spirit and we knew we could perform well. But we did not expect that we would do so well," Küng said in a post-race interview, alongside his teammates. "It was really cool to ride with these two gentlemen (Stefan Bissegger and Mauro Schmid) and then cheering on the ladies.”
Küng finished second in the European championships by less than a second, and then finished in the same position at the Worlds, after beating all of the main contenders but being surprised by shocking winner Tobias Foss. With this set of results it wouldn't come as a surprise to see another runner-up position, but the Groupama - FDJ rider played a key role in ensuring gold.
He raced alongside Bissegger and Schmid in the men's stint at the race, which managed to be the fastest as in all intermediate points the team kept it's lead. Although he won't get to wear the rainbow jersey throughout the coming year; the win, the gold medal and the jersey received at the podium which he will keep will remain a very fond memory, and a return to success for the 28-year old.
