Mathieu van der Poel is focusing on the Road Race this Sunday, however came into the Mixed Relay event with the hopes of getting some more race rhythm but also assist in the fight for a top result. Luck was not on the country's side however, with the team only achieving a fifth place in the results sheet.
“We have tried to make the best of it. I was able to make the effort that I had in mind, but all in all it is a bad day," the Dutchman said at the end of the day. Annemiek van Vleuten crashed seconds into her effort on the women's side, and on the men's side van der Poel lost the company of Bauke Mollema early on due to a mechanical. This effectively left the country racing with four riders instead of six, not allowing them to compete for the medals realistically.
"It makes a big difference whether you complete such a time trial with two or three riders. Not only in terms of turns, but you are also a lot longer in the wheel with three men to recover," the Alpecin-Deceuninck rider explained. "Other countries are also at the start here with three top time trialists. That can no longer be made up for.”
His mind will now be on Sunday's race however, where he will be one of the main contenders. He's averaged 448 watts during today's effort during approximately 16 minutes, indicating he is carrying good form into the race.
