The saga on
Toon Aerts's Letrozole case is set to end very soon. If not this week then the next, a decision is set to come from the UCI throughout the Christmas period regarding the Belgian rider.
Aerts, one of the most prominent cyclocross racers of the past years, has tested positive for the substance letrozole, which blocks the formation of estrogen, hence helping with the production of testosterone in the body. At the time it was also said that the substance is not found in any medication. Aerts was not suspended, but he himself decided not to keep racing.
Ever since he's lost his contract with Baloise - Trek Lions, and he has occasionally been seen in races, noticeably not even cutting his hair in case that could help his case. Reactions have been mixed within the field, however a decision on his case is coming very soon.
There have been many comparisons to the case of weightlifter Heiki Nabi who tested positive for the same substance, who ended up with a two-year suspension however the official report added that he did not cheat. Aerts' belief is that, like Nabi, he had taken a contaminated supplement.
