World Championships at risk for Jai Hindley as he tests positive for Covid-19

Australia will be going with high ambitions into their home World Championships, and Michael Matthews will lead the aspirations of the men's Elite team at the final road race. One of his most important support riders however, Jai Hindley, is at risk of missing out on the race due to a Covid-19 infection.

"Jai tested positive more than a week before the competition, but we will make a final decision on his participation closer to the event," Australia's medical officer Dr Kevyn Hernandez said. "As with all events, we have a plan B and plan C, something all sporting teams need to have these days."

It is expected that the Giro d'Italia winner manages to recover in time, however as he is still in Europe where he's based throughout the season, it is uncertain whether he'll be able to make the trip in time. The team has backups ready to fill in the position in case of need, but Hindley's absence would be meaningful.

Although not a puncheur, Hindley's climbing abilities would be important in the Wollongong circuit which features over 4000 meters of climbing. Having shown great form into the final week of the Vuelta a Espana, he and Ben O'Connor are expected to be the riders to support the Team BikeExchange - Jayco rider. A final decision is set to be taken in the coming days.
