A significant amount of effort is being made by UCI to reduce its environmental impact. It has attracted 80 founding signatories, including major event organizers ASO, RCS Sports, and Flanders Classics for its Climate Action Charter.
It is true that professional cycling promotes cycling but also creates a significant carbon footprint, since race convoys travel around the world every day. By signing this Charter, they commit to measure and report emissions to internationally recognised standards and take concrete actions to reduce waste and energy demand.
As part of UCI's Agenda 2030, the UCI Climate Action Charter is a vital stepping stone . In its next Annual Report, the UCI will report on progress regarding climate action in cycling. Detailed status updates will be published in 2024 after an audit of signatories and analysis of emissions reports.
“I am delighted that so many stakeholders have already committed to our UCI Climate Action Charter. Our aim when adopting this Charter was to unite cycling’s stakeholders to reduce our sport’s emissions and help slow climate change. We need to work together, learn from each other and collaborate on solutions for the shared challenges we face to achieve climate neutrality for our sport,” UCI President David Lappartient said.
