GC hopefuls Max Poole and Pello Bilbao put in solid times of 13:54 and 13:46 respectively but neither could dislodge McNulty from the hot seat.
McNulty's UAE Team Emirates leader, Adam Yates also broke the 14:00 barrier with his time of 13:55, though again, he was quite some distance from the American.
Ilan Van Wilder and Rainer Kepplinger improved on Pello Bilbao's effort, crossing the line 17 and 16 seconds behind McNulty respectively, but it was another of his UAE Team Emirates teammates,
Mikkel Bjerg who came the closest, missing out on the lead by just 4 seconds.
Moments later,
Jay Vine made it a provisional top-3 for UAE Team Emirates as he sandwiched himself between Bjerg and McNulty, clocking 13:29, two seconds behind off the lead.
Former time-trial world champion, Tobias Foss,
who was notably riding an incredible 68-tooth chainring, could only manage a provisional 4th place at the line, 14 seconds behind McNulty.
