Jonathan Milan is one of the biggest and heaviest riders in the peloton but his climbing ability is impressive. The Lidl-Trek rider survived the hilly course today at Tirreno-Adriatico and then went on to incredibly outsprint Jasper Philipsen at the finish line; another incredible performance that proves his talent.
“What a day. I have to thank my teammates. They did a great job. I didn't have an easy day because I had a flat tire uphill. We came back to the peloton," Milan said in a post-race interview. "The guys really supported me in the best way possible. I was able to finish it. They kept pushing until the final, it was unbelievable. I really have to thank them. This means a lot to me.”
This was truly a collective win for Milan, who reiterates his thankfulness for Lidl-Trek's support throughout the day: “I really, really wanted to win. We came here with several goals. We wanted to achieve good results, with me and the team. This morning I wanted it so bad. But this is not just my victory, this is a team victory. Once again: thank you to my teammates.”
The Italian won after a lucky set of coincidences. INEOS Grenadiers did a lot of work to bring back the breakaway but this only happened already mid-sprint. This was because Tom Pidcock launched an early sprint after the tough section of the final hilltop finish, and then in what was a long sprint, Milan beat Philipsen and Corbin Strong in the final sprint.
