Primoz Roglic's transfer to BORA - hansgrohe was one of the main stories of the winter with no doubt, and also the most costly move of the entire transfer season. Besides a millionaire contract there was a payout for the Slovenian to change teams; but Patrick Lefevere claims he knows that Primoz Roglic himself payed to leave the team and how much that was.
"That was a really strange story. Primoz paid money to leave Jumbo-Visma. I know the amount," Lefevere said in the Stamcafé Koers podcast. "And a little later Cian wants to leave BORA-hansgrohe, but he has a certain agreement and is not allowed to leave. Suddenly it's allowed.' Was it then a matter of money? "It always is." The Belgian team manager is not one to keep secrets on the behind-the-scenes of the cycling world, but such statement comes as a surprise and to be taken with a grain of salt.
It is said that the team had been able to save some funds over the past few seasons, which it then used to make for a big financial boost to Team Visma | Lease a Bike, who still had a year of contract left with Roglic. There was a clause of €3 million euros reportedly, however this is not confirmed. That and the large salary payed to the Slovenian do raise questions, but it is unlikely that there is a response to this statement.
"The Evenepoel project is still going ahead. If Soudal, Quick-Step and Specialized remain on board, it will be no problem to continue this," he says of the team, also adding insight on Remco Evenepoel: #He would first talk too much. But young boys just think very differently. At home and at school they are taught not to talk and then as a rider you suddenly get a microphone under your nose."
