Stage 4 of
Tirreno-Adriatico had an incredibly dramatic finale as breakaway survivor Jonas Abrahamsen was caught only mid-sprint. In the hilly day, the sprinters still fought for the win and it was
Jonathan Milan who took the glory, beating
Jasper Philipsen.
A dangerous breakaway went up the road in the day, which with some hills caused a lot of tension in the peloton. Mirco Maestri, Davide Bais, Lorenzo Quartucci, Alexander Kamp, Jonas Abrahamsen and Alex Tolio.
The peloton had a hilly finale but a bunch sprint was to follow, with the sprinters that survived the rough finale. Abrahamsen, Kamp and Maestri kept moving with 28 kilometers to go as the other three were dropped.
The trio caused real fear in the peloton, keeping up a very strong pace throughout several kilometers and still entering the final hilltop in front. Abrahamsen specifically managed to take off in the toughest section of the ascent and kept a lead into the finishing straight.
The peloton saw no attacks, and it was only because of Tom Pidcock's early sprint that Abrahamsen was caught already mid-sprint. Jonathan Milan was the fastest out of those in a very tight sprint, beating Jasper Philipsen and
Biniam Girmay to triumph.
