Team BikeExchange has headed to the
Vuelta a Asturias as a final test for
Simon Yates before the Giro d'Italia, and have gotten the best possible response on the opening day as the Briton stormed to the stage win after an attack in the final climb.
In a post-race interview, Yates thanked his teammates and detailed what was his second win of the season: “First of all, I have to thank all of my teammates for the great work they have done all day long. In the finale, we kept the pace high to avoid some attacks and be in the top positions at the start of the last climb. Damien Howson made a move, got a gap and then I attacked over the top," he said. Sure enough, that attack saw him distance the competition and head into Pola de Lena alone, where he was able to keep his gap and celebrate the win.
"The sensations are good, and the legs responded very well. Tomorrow is the Queen stage, and it would be nice to be able to win again, also because my goal remains to win the overall," Yates concluded.
Tomorrow's stage will see the riders head into the mountains, and overcome the Alto el Acebo, on the way to Cangas de Narcea - the traditional queen stage of the Spanish race - where the overall classification is likely to be decided.
