Simon Yates won the initial stage of the Vuelta a Asturias with a solo attack. The Team BikeExchange- Jayco rider attacked the hilly 169 kilometer stage to take the first leader's jersey of the race, already with significant gaps over his rivals. Vincenzo Albanese won the sprint behind for second place, followed by Alexis Vuillermoz.
Yates is using the Spanish race in preparation for the upcoming Giro d'Italia, and will be heading into the queen stage tomorrow in the lead and with confidence of a good build-up towards the first big goal of the season. In a time where Team BikeExchange - Jayco are in need of UCI points, it is also an important win.
