Remi Cavagna will leave Movistar after first year of a three-year contract

Rémi Cavagna, who was set to be one of the team's most interesting names with his signing for the 2024 season, will leave Movistar Team this winter despite still being under contract until 2026. This is because of the bad relations between the two throughout this season, which he has been open about.

In words to L'Équipe a few months ago Cavagna opened up about just how unhappy he was with the transfer. "I came to the team to progress and I feel like I've taken a step backwards in a few months. I'm not even good enough to finish in the top 50 in the Tour of Belgium. That's not my place; that's not what I'm worth. But that doesn't seem to bother anyone, apart from myself." Only months into a three-year long contract, it already seemed clear that disaster had struck. Cavagna spent his year as a domestique regularly, but his role in the team wasn't the main issue - it was communication.

"I’ve progressed in Spanish, I’ve taken some courses, I invested in that and I understand almost everything. But when I want to express myself a bit, I’ve found myself on the limit, and it’s a bit rubbish when I try to integrate myself."

According to AS, the French rider and the French team have severed ties, and Cavagna will probably leave the squad for a team in his native country. Groupama - FDJ seems to be the best positioned to get him.

This will open up a gap in the Movistar Team squad, which continues to make its respective signings for 2025. Already announced are Pablo Castrillo, Orluis Aular, Diego Pescador and Natnael Tesfatsion. As for Movistar Team, the Spanish team is without a great time-trial specialist as such. However, Iván Romeo has just won the under-23 world championships in Zurich and his potential is enormous whilst Cat Ferguson promises the same in the women's team.

Rémi Cavagna's name has been very much in the spotlight this season. As mentioned above, he has gone from being one of the peloton's biggest threats in time trials to not even being taken into account. With his probable departure to Groupama - FDJ, he will be looking to recover the great level of the past in a team of his own country.
