"Now it's more dangerous to ride a bike" - Sagan concerned for cyclists safety on the road following Davide Rebellin's tragic death

Following the tragic death of Davide Rebellin in a hit-and-run incident, one of cycling's most prominent figures, Peter Sagan, is urging drivers to take more care in regards to cyclists on the road.

"If we compare it to 10 years ago, now it's more dangerous to ride a bike," Sagan tells the Spanish sports newspaper Marca. "There are more and more cars and more people are looking at their phones while driving. That's not the only reason, but I think our generation is not prepared for so much technology.”

Davide Rebellin was regarded as one of the finest Classics specialists of his generation and his death sent shockwaves through the cycling world. Even Sagan himself was affected on a personal level by the Italian's untimely passing. The 32-year-old TotalEnergies rider admits as much, saying "Rebellin's death affected me a lot."

Looking to the future Sagan is asked if he believes he can still win the biggest races. "I don't like being asked if I can still fight for the race," the Slovakian responds. "I do the best I can and always try to be at the highest level. If not, I wouldn't ride."
