National Championships UPDATE: Elisa Longo Borghini storms to victory at Italian road race

The national championships see the man take a break in the most part this Saturday but the women's peloton takes over the lead. Many big nations such as Italy, France, Germany and Spain have already found their new road race national champions.

Elisa Longo Borghini revalidated her title with a long solo attack in the Italian race. The Lidl-Trek rider has managed to put on a brilliant ride to take the victory in Bagno a Ripoli - Scarperia. Chiara Consonni won the sprint to second place 13 seconds behind whilst Eleonora Gasparrini was third. 

In the French race we have had FDJ-SUEZ with plenty riders towards the front in relative domination but failed to come away with the win. Juliette Labous of Team DSM-Firmenich PostNL is the new national champion. Gladys Verhulst-Wild and Jade Wiel were second and third for the home team - with Evita Muzic also of FDJ finishing fourth.

In Germany DSM took another win, this time around with the efforts of Franziska Koch. The 23-year old rider managed to directly beat Liane Lippert in the final sprint, with Antonia Niedermaier coming away with a third place after a valiant race.

In Spain it was Laboral Kutxa - Fundación Euskadi taking first and second on the race. The Basque team managed to use their numbers to good effect and finished first and second with Usoa Ostolaza taking the victory; whilst Iurani Blanco raced to second. Veteran Mavi García was third to complete the podium.

In Portugal it seems like Deja vu. After having achieved the same in 2022, Daniela Campos has won both time-trial and road race. After yesterday's triumph, the 22-year old could celebrate today once again as she beat Ana Caramelo and Mariana Libano to victory.
