Two of the biggest names in the peloton today, Mathieu van der Poel and Remco Evenepoel are fierce rivals on the bike, but good friends off it. This has been showcased again recently, as the two world champions train together at altitude.
Posting on his official Strava account, Evenepoel shares a picture of Van der Poel's back wheel on a climb in Calpe with the caption "My turn to be on the BBQ." Taking in over 200km of riding over nearly six and half hours and with elevation gain of just shy of 3,000 metres, it was far from a leisurely afternoon bike ride in the sunshine either.
Evenepoel will return to racing at the upcoming Tour of Britain, with his big goals for the remainder of the campaign being success at the likes of the European Championships, the World Championships and finally, Il Lombardia. Van der Poel meanwhile, was confirmed this Friday to be leading the Dutch at the European Championships and will also have a keen eye on defending his Rainbow Jersey won last year.

i never used to like remco, until i found out van der poel was buddies with him. i figured if a guy as manifestly nice and cool as mvdp liked him, the kid couldn’t be so bad.

Well, it's Remco style to try to make friend with everyone better than him, look how he behaved with Pogi at the Tour, Vinge and Rogla on last Vuelta, etc, I think he tries to learn from them to get better and beat them eventually.

Agreed! And this is a smart move!

i also think he’s just matured a bit, you know? used to be kind of a selfish, whiny little prima donna. more and more he lets results speak to his talent and has gotten on board with the overall genial, friendly vibe of the peloton as established by the big leaders like mathieu and pogačar, et al.

yeah but go back to the first WC that Remco ever rode in England, it was brutal, and look at what he did for Philippe Gilbert and what Gilbert said about him. I think it is the media as much anything that plays up the image for clicks. when I read Gilbert’s comments I was impressed and realized what kind of rider he is.

They were already friends outside of Remco and Roglic
