The new road race World Champion Mathieu van der Poel originally had in mind wrapping up his road season at the World Championships, but with a new equipment to put on display, he will return to competition at the Eurométropole Tour.
The Alpecin-Deceuninck rider has taken some time off after a heavy block of training and racing which included the Tour de France and the very tough worlds. There, in Glasgow, he managed to take advantage of the very long and technical race to accelerate away from the competition and into the world title.
Van der Poel is to ride the Olympic Games Test Events on the 23rd and 24th of September and later on the European Gravel Championships on October 1st. These will be two goals in his mind, he looks to build some form and in the meantime use some road racing to get back into the rhythm.
The Eurométropole Tour - now named Circuit Franco-Belge, will take place in the 28th of September and be a launchpad for sprinters and classics specialists.
