There has been joy for EF Education EasyPost on stage 2 of the 2025 Tour de Suisse with Vincenzo Albanese powering to the stage win in a chaotic finale.
A strong trio broke free to form the breakaway on stage 2, with Silvan Dillier (Alpecin - Deceuninck), Jonas Rutsch (Intermarché - Wanty) and Mauro Schmid (Team Jayco AlUla) all on the attack. Because of the threat of those up the road though, the peloton weren't leaving much to chance and held the break on a tight leash throughout the day, ensuring a high pace as a result.
Best placed on GC was Rutsch, who had started the day more than six minutes down, so there wasn't any threat in that regard. As such, instead of the team of race leader Romain Gregoire, it was mainly Team Picnic PostNL that were doing the work on the front of the bunch. As the climbing began in the final 60km of the day, the break was only around 1:18 clear.
Once that road started to go uphill, it wasn't long before Dillier was dropped by Rutsch and Schmid in the break. Despite the fact that the leading pair were stepping up the pace though, the time gap to the peloton was still dropping thanks to some destructive work in the bunch by the Tudor Pro Cycling Team.
The pace of the peloton on the climbs was also taking an effect towards the back too with some notable names like Jordi Meeus and Chris Froome in trouble and dropped.
With 17km to go, Schmid dropped Rutsch, going solo at the head of the race. With the peloton now only around 15 seconds behind the Swiss national champion though, a solo stage win was still unlikely for the 25-year-old. With 13km to go, he too was then swallowed up by the peloton.
From there, a punchy, uphill sprint was always the most likely looking finale. Not everyone was happy to wait for the sprint though, and inside the final 3km, Jan Christen attempted to launch a flyer.
Once Christen was caught though, the fight for the stage win well and truly began and in the end it was Vincenzo Albanese who powered to the win ahead of Fabio Christen and Lewis Askey.
