After missing out on the medals in the road race of the European Championships in Limburg last week, Mads Pedersen, Mattias Skjelmose and others will now refocus on Zurich and the 2024 World Championships as the Danish confirm a Jonas Vingegaard-less, eight man lineup.
With the quartet of Mattias Skjelmose, Mads Pedersen, Michael Valgren and Magnus Cort Nielsen having been confirmed for a while as part of the Zurich attack of the Danes, just four spots were left open prior to this final selection being announced. Completing the team are: Jakob Fuglsang, Mikkel Honoré, Frederik Wandahl and Andreas Kron.
On the selection of the vastly experienced Fuglsang, Danish national coach, Anders Lund shared his thoughts in conversation with Ekstra Bladet. "It is not for nostalgic reasons that he is selected. It is because he has ridden really well from the Tour onwards," Lund insists of the 39-year-old Fuglsang, 5th at the 2020 World Championships in Imola. "If you look at Jakob's career, he is quite obsessed, a really skilled championship rider. Especially at the championships, he has had a stamina in his physique that makes him go far in those races."
"He has raced the World Championships many times, so it is some calm that can be brought into the team," Lund adds in conclusion. "He has sat in quite a few finals by now, so he will be an important man for Mattias Skjelmose,"
Notably, for the men's elite individual time trial in Zurich, the Danes have opted for the duo of Mikkel Bjerg and Kasper Asgreen.
