Late attack sees Antonio Tiberi snatch 2024 Tour of Luxembourg GC from Mathieu van der Poel as David Gaudu takes stage success

Bahrain Victorious' Antonio Tiberi has snatched overall victory at the 2024 Tour de Luxembourg from Mathieu van der Poel in a thrilling finale to stage 5 as David Gaudu took the stage success.

Heading into the final 30km, a three man break held just over a minutes advantage over the peloton. That trio being Archie Ryan (EF Education-EasyPost), Lorenzo Milesi (Movistar Team) and Johannes Staune-Mittet (Team Visma | Lease a Bike), the latter being the best placed GC wise, starting the day 1:59 behind race leader Mathieu van der Poel.

With 25km still to go, Marc Hirschi started the attacks in the peloton behind. Onto the final 11.3km lap though, the attackers had been caught and a select group controlled the front of the race. With the next attack to go clear being a four man group that included Antonio Tiberi (+10 at the start of the day), the GC was at risk in the final 3km as the Bahrain - Victorious man, David Gaudu, Quinn Simmons and Jordan Jegat led by 30 seconds. Gaudu took the stage victory and the 10 bonus seconds, Tiberi missed out on bonuses all together importantly. As the likes of Van der Poel chased hard, the time ticked over and overall victory ended up in the hands of Tiberi!
