Juan Ayuso smashed times of Lance Armstrong and Jan Ullrich in his victory at the Tour de Suisse

Juan Ayuso has had a very complicated start to 2023 due to tendonitis from which he took a long time to recover, but since he returned in the last Tour de Romandie he has only been improving. So much so that in the recent Tour de Suisse he managed to break a record set by Jan Ullrich and destroy a time set by Lance Armstrong.

His exhibition on the queen stage of the Tour de Suisse gave a lot to talk about. The Spanish cyclist from UAE Team Emirates recovered his sensations, escaping on the last climb of the day and winning in the style of Tadej Pogacar.

But the most impressive thing about that mountainous stage was the data that Juan Ayuso left behind. On the final climb, which was the toughest section of the event, the Spanish cyclist set a record that becomes even more relevant when compared to the best records achieved by stars like Jan Ullrich and Lance Armstrong a little over a decade ago.

Ayuso has become the fastest cyclist to climb a peak as demanding as the Albula Pass. This port is 22.4 kilometres long with an average gradient of 6%. The top of the ascent is 2312 meters above sea level. In this challenging port, as commented by colleagues from Diario del Triatlón, the Spanish cyclist recorded a time of 34 minutes and 35 seconds, surpassing the record that Jan Ullrich had held since 2006 by 2 minutes and 7 seconds, and by 3 minutes and 51 seconds Lance Armstrong's fastest time in 2010.

Juan Ayuso's record was favoured by ideal weather conditions in terms of temperature and favourable wind. However, it is important to note that the German and American star's records were further aided by the use of EPO, which makes the Spanish cyclist's achievement even more remarkable.

During the ascent to the Albula Pass, Juan Ayuso demonstrated spectacular power. In the last 4.5 kilometres, with an average slope greater than 7%, he developed an average of 400 watts, needing only 10 minutes and 49 seconds and reaching an average speed of 24.7 km/h.

The triumphant return of Juan Ayuso has left all cycling fans impressed. His determination to overcome tendonitis and his amazing performance in the Tour de Suisse shows that he is a rider with a promising future. At just 19 years old, Ayuso is already making his mark in the world of cycling and is emerging as one of the brightest young promises in the discipline.

Fans are eagerly awaiting the next performances by Juan Ayuso, who has proven his worth and talent with every pedal stroke. With impressive records and a tireless attitude, this young Spanish cyclist has a promising road ahead of him and is sure to continue to amaze the cycling world with his dazzling career.
