Following in the footsteps of past winners such as Aleksandr Vlasov, Tom Pidcock and Juan Ayuso,
Johannes Staune-Mittet took overall victory at the
Giro d'Italia Under 23. The Norwegian looks set to become the latest star of the
Jumbo-Visma production line.
Taking the overall lead of the race on the day in which 24 riders were given their marching orders from the race after holding onto team cars and motorbikes up the Passo dello Stelvio, Staune-Mittet thrived in his position as the man to beat.
"This means a lot to me. We came here to win the Giro with me or with one of the other guys. I've been feeling strong all week and had great support from my teammates throughout the race," the 21-year-old told the official Jumbo-Visma website. "When we took the jersey, we did everything we could to keep it."
“We have to celebrate this together, because it really is a team effort. There are so many good riders in the team. For me personally, that also means that I have to keep improving. That is possible in this team and I am grateful for that," he continues. "This of course only gives me more confidence. Winning this beautiful trophy is a unique and beautiful experience that makes you want more."
