Enric Mas, like the rest of the favorites to win the Vuelta a España 2023, has supported the decision that the second stage would end on time with 9 kilometers to go. The Mallorcan spoke with Jonas Vingegaard before the stage and explained what they discussed the decision which ended up taking place.
"It was a little bit weird what happened, I think sometimes you have to make decisions and today we agreed and that's what you saw," he said in a post-race interview. "If it had been 3.6 km to the finish it would have been more dangerous and it was the riders' decision, I think we acted well. I don't think there was anyone against".
Mas crossed the line in the large grupetto, saving his legs for the important days ahead. Movistar rode a terrific team time-trial and as it stands, the Spaniard is the best placed out of the red jersey contenders. Tomorrow that may change, the Arinsal summit finish is not overly hard but will already bring the climbers to the very front.
Regarding tomorrow's stage in Andorra, where he lives, he assures that it will be tough and that the weather could again be a key factor: "It's a tough finish, it's not a long time pass, but you can lose a lot of time so we'll have to be very attentive and see how the weather accompanies us in Andorra."
