Stage 1 of Paris-Nice was quite an exciting one. Whilst a reduced bunch sprint decided the outcome of the stage, the likes of Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic were involved in the action earlier on, and so was Egan Bernal...
“It was a nervous and tough day, but in the end I think we did well. We worked well and have to be happy with our day and our performance," Bernal said in a video following the stage. With the weather being calm, legs were saved for the two hilltops that came close to the stage finish. Bernal sprinted for two bonus seconds at the top of the first joininf a small group with Remco Evenepoel and Matteo Jorgenson, and then on the second he himself attacked.
“We had the plan to make a move on the last climb. We were in a good position, so when I saw the opportunity I followed the first guys. It wasn't the main goal of the day, but when I was there, I just went for it," he explains. "It was good that we had a plan – to set the course hard – and we executed it.”
Ultimately both attacks were reeled in but the Colombian snatched a few seconds and some motivation. Into stage 2, he starts the day among the first in the overall classification, and with a strong sense of leadership within INEOS Grenadiers.
