The tension was real. Remco Evenepoel has managed to save this race yesterday after two crashes that looked bad at first, but they have left damage. However after making it through the night and reaching the start of stage 6 in Napoli, the World Champion has good feedback.
“How am I? Good. Everthing alright. I had a good night's sleep and I was well looked after. We think everything is under control," Evenepoel told Sporza. "That fall was frustrating. I did everything I could to safely enter the last two miles. Arkéa-Samsic asked for space. I looked to the left and moved to the right. Then Trek-Segafredo got past me and on the second tap I fell.”
The first crash saw a dog take out a few riders in the peloton. It was a difficult situation that looked tense at first. However Soudal - Quick-Step managed to focus and return to their position at the head of the peloton. However as the riders went through the last three kilometers to go, a moment of distraction was enough to see him go down again.
Evenepoel bumped wheels and lost balance, crashing for the second time in the day. He hasn't lost time but was visbily upset over a second tumble and the possible consequences it would have in his race.
“Now I could get myself taken care of right away, in Spain it was still a little way to the finish. And it's good that we already have a tough stage today. It all seems okay," the Belgian continues. He started stage 6 in second place on the overall classification, only behind Andreas Leknessund.
“Yesterday it was a bit later because of the pain I had, but last night I didn't have any pain anymore. I also got a good massage, so normally it should be loose now. I reconnoitered today's ride so I know what to expect. I expect more or less the same scenario as yesterday. Either it will be full uphill or we will go up evenly," he concluded.
