- Isn't "watching an entire GT knowing who's going to win" the whole Pogi MO? Being a fan of such an overwhelming favourite for every race must be the acme of tedium.
- We have to remember that initially this Giro was planned to include Joao Almeida and Richard Carapaz before injury/illness made them withdraw. A former Giro winner and frequent GT podium placers between them, it would've added more heat to the upper end for sure.
- Yawn once again! Go back to your YouTubing 20/20 hindsight !
- Indeed, but the issue is countries that appeared to be stable and backed by the world superpower now look unstable and the backing looks much less helpful than it did 3 months ago. And while the Saudis can pipe oil, that pipeline was already hit by Iran, if for no other reason than to prove the oil is moved when they allow it.
And the instability doesn't look like it's going to change for the long run, as now people can see the empire has no clothes, and regional powers can stop it.
But, the damage caused by this war isn't short-term, and even if the war ended today, we'll be feeling the effects for a decade, and even more for the Gulf countries!
- He has a big fat contract with Sky until the end of 2027. Given his lackluster performance after the life-threatening accident, it will be surprising to see him getting a better deal than what he has right now.
- It’s difficult to know where to begin given how fundamentally reductive that perspective is.
Your comparison highlights a common misunderstanding of cycling. A Grand Tour and a one-day Monument share almost no DNA beyond the bicycle itself. It is like equating a marathon to 100m sprint, they are entirely different physiological and strategic disciplines.
But if we’re humoring the comparison of attendance to either, let’s consider some important factors:
- GC team vs Classics team
- Teams facing pressure from their sponsor and their sponsor’s target region, e.g Belgium, Italy, or France
- UCI points and survival
- Risk mitigation: send a rider away for 4-5 weeks or to many 1 day races
- Developing talent
I could elaborate further, but I’ll leave it there. And I recommend you listen to Tadej’s interviews about being bored of the Tour, and it being his choice to ride the Giro in 24’. For a Tadej fan-boy, I’m surprised you don’t know this.
- Looking at 2025 and using stats from PCS. Giro 7th best start list. Roubaix and Flanders - 15th and 16th best start list. Basically there is the TDF on the top tier and everything else, monuments included, on a much lower tier
- Watching 21 days of a Grand Tour knowing who's going to win can get a little boring. Some good competition at the top is absolutely necessary to make it enjoyable. I see some hope at the TdF this year. The Giro is a foregone conclusion at this point.
- Normal, has shitty weather and shitty timing. Many will avoid because they have to/can do the TOUR.
Comparing GTs with one day races is totally pointless, no problem to recover from one race to the next, most can’t do that with GTs.
How long will this pseudo last?
- Inclined to agree, nobody knows how much he’s trying or holding back knowing the bigger goal is a bit down the line.
No point in taking these figures too seriously especially that very little is devoted to conditions and context.
Only betting outfits and the teams themselves should be considering these.
