Einer Rubio is the overall and mountain stage leader for Movistar Team in the Giro d'Italia. The team's leaders have high hopes for the young Colombian and see him as one of the team's captains in 2024 alongside Enric Mas.
In an interview with Nacho Labarga of the Marca newspaper, he reviewed his goals in a Giro that, due to the 70-kilometer time trial, doesn't suit his abilities too well. Despite this, he is ambitious: "I would be satisfied with a stage win and a Top 10. That would be the goal. The course is very tough, depending on how the race is, we'll move one way or another," he said.
He doesn't hide from the time trials and knows they will be a problem: "It's clear that it's a disadvantage for me and my abilities, but we'll see. The Giro is very long and there can be many surprises. We'll try to look for our moment".
Regarding being a team leader in 2024, he takes it one step at a time: "First I have to give the team the assurance that I can be a solid leader. We are working on it. We have to do things right and prove that I can do it. Then we'll see. I have to earn it.
He was asked about the current situation of Colombian cycling, which due to the problems that Nairo Quintana and Miguel Angel Lopez are going through is not ideal: "We don't have a great moment. The level of cycling has changed a lot. It's hard. Now we are here and we will try to do our best. There are riders like Buitrago or myself who are there and who can win a grand tour in the future".
