Yesterday's Giro d'Italia stage on paper did not seem too dangerous and on the TV broadcast was not too different. However off camera there was a very serious crash involving Alexander Krieger of Tudor Pro Cycling Team who was transported to the hospital with multiple injuries.
The results sheet displayed a DNF for the German rider who came to the Giro to ride in support of Alberto Dainese and Marius Mayrhofer in the sprint stages but his race ended this Sunday. Krieger was a victim of a crash in the final descent of the stage, which also saw Bardiani's Martin Marcellusi go down.
Krieger suffered multiple rib fractures and also a fractured pelvis according to the Swiss team who provided an update last evening. Following the stage, the race was criticized heavily by Geraint Thomas who also went down late in the day, but Juan Sebastián Molano also complained about the poor road surface in the final descent.
Thomas however went as far as saying that "sometimes we are like clowns in a circus. You heard chains jumping off bikes all the time" but also that on the final descent "there were also a lot of holes in the road," one of which is assumed to have led to this crash.
