Fernando Gaviria very likely to stay for at least one more year in Movistar Team after great 2024 campaign

Fernando Gaviria will remain with Movistar Team for another year. Or at least that's what cycling market journalist Daniel Benson has hinted at. The truth is that the rider from La Ceja, despite the fact that he has only raised his arms once this season, has scored a great haul of points for the Spanish team in both the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France.

Gaviria started the season in a sensational way winning his first race at the Tour Colombia. Then he achieved three top 10s in the UAE Tour and came 14th in the Classic Brugge-De Panne. At the Giro, he signed up to five top 10s, including a fourth place on the final stage in Rome, being the Movistar rider with more accumulated points.

He did even better at the Tour, where he locked in three top 5s including a second and a third place. Although he fell apart in the last week, he also ended up giving a big points haul to the team. So, we can say that Gaviria is key for Movistar as at this moment there is no risk of losing the WorldTour license.

At 29 years old, Fernando Gaviria is still dreaming of becoming the great sprinter he was five years ago, when he won five stages in the Giro d'Italia and two in the Tour de France. His last years in UAE Team Emirates were not good and in these two campaigns in Movistar Team it seems that little by little he has been regaining confidence in his possibilities. Undoubtedly, after the podiums obtained this year, the goal in 2025 should be to return to win a stage in a grand tour.

Normally, the renewal would be for one more season. Yesterday we already published other Movistar movements: the departures of Alex Aranburu and Ivan Sosa were confirmed, as well as the renewal of Nairo Quintana.
