Once again, the Colombian speedster Fernando Gaviria sought to surprise from afar in the final sprint of stage 13 of the Giro d'Italia, however it was not enough to flabbergast Jonathan Milan who continues to dominate the bunch sprints at the Italian grand tour with his third triumph.
Seemingly in his trademark style Gaviria launched the attack: "No, that was too far away. I think my nerves got the better of me again, the desire to do it well and nothing. We found an animal, a very strong rider, and we bowed our heads and accepted defeat," the Movistar Team rider told Caracol Sports.
Perhaps his attack came too soon: "I felt it was time to start and I launched but my legs were lacking, a strong start, I think I held on well but it was very long," said Gaviria, who openend his sprint 300 meters from the finishline.
Milan was in the second big group in echelons, Gaviria believes that it left a small mark on the Italian's sprint: "It cost him, it cost him or else he would have made more difference to us, but oh well. He is a very strong rider, he has a very strong team and in the end they also worked for victory," he concluded.
