The
Giro d'Italia saw it's flattest stage this Friday afternoon. Before an important weekend for the overall classification, the riders took on another day that was suited to the sprinters; and the one who has performed the best over this race has taken another win.
However it was not a simple win. Milan, earlier in the day, was for a while distanced from the peloton after INEOS Grenadiers put the pedal to the metal in the crosswinds, splitting the peloton. For several minutes, it looked like the Maglia Ciclamino's chances of taking a stage win were dading away. “Let's say I stopped for a while, but when I got back into the group, it turned out that the peloton was spread out like crazy. We did a fantastic job with the boys, pushing full throttle to come back and take back the first group," Milan told Eurosport following the stage win.
A strong collective performance from the American team saw Milan eventually return to the peloton and then be set up for the final sprint in what could only be termed as perfection. “After that we always stayed at the front. The teammates also gave me the perfect lead out," he described. Jasper Stuyven, Edward Theuns and Simone Consonni put in a masterful effort to once again deliver the Italian in perfect position to the sprint.
"We knew we had to stay calm in the final corner with lead-out Simone Consonni, so he could attack with 400 meters to go. In the end it happened that way. It's quite impressive how everyone did their part and gave their all to the team goal. I am very happy and proud of how we finished it," he concluded. Milan chased down the early sprint of Fernando Gaviria, and then took the win ahead of Stanislaw Aniolkowski.
