The Mur de Huy is as tough as ever and it was another thrilling finish to #FlecheWallonne. @tompidcock was right up there in the final kilometre, eventually finishing in 18th.
Tom Pidcock showed really good form at the Tour of Flanders and Amstel Gold Race. On both occasions he suffered due to the distance however. At Fléche Wallone that wasn't expected to be a problem, but instead the Briton has struggled with fatigue and faded at the Mur de Huy.
"The Mur de Huy does not lie. It went properly. I think he can be beaten on this climb, but that was not the case for this edition. At least, not by me," Pidcock admitted in a post-race interview. "I wasn't good. It went okay, but I had no explosiveness in my legs. To be honest, I think I went too deep in the Amstel Gold Race and I haven't recovered enough from that."
The Briton finished third at Amstel Gold Race this Sunday and in the meantime prepared for Flèche Wallone. He was rated by many as one of the big favourites and was in a good position at the Mur de Huy, hoping to fight for the win. However that wasn't to be today, as Romain Bardet accelerated in the final few hundred meters many followed but the INEOS Grenadiers rider wasn't one of them. Pidcock didn't have the legs on the day and crossed the line 18th, disappointed.
"It is what it is, if I have my day, I can win this race. But when it came down to it, I had no energy," he says, realistic with his performance. "It was a fast day with a lot of headwind, which made it difficult. I have a bit more time for Liège-Bastogne-Liège, I'm looking forward to that."
