Esteban Chaves was in his first years at the World Tour one of the most promising climbers and stage-racers of his generation. After having finished in the podium of the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España at a young age, he struggled to keep his consistency in the last few years, and he's opened about about the struggles pro cyclists can face outside of the bike.
In an interview with El Cycling Podcast, Chaves has talked about some struggles that riders in the pro peloton are currently facing: "I don't feel like anyone in the world is ready for that and that the teams care about someone: if he gets injured, if he suffers from depression, if he's sad... What counts is the result and he has to do this amount of hours, these efforts, these watts..."
He went onto add: "You can measure absolutely everything. It's very hard and the human body and mind whilst burst through somewhere. I was lucky to be surrounded with people who want me a lot and I managed to be in front."
"The easiest thing in cycling is to pedal," Chaves said. After a late start to the European season, yesterday at Milano - Torino, Chaves is gearing his focus into the Giro d'Italia where he's planning to co-lead the team alongside Hugh Carthy.
